Learn How Invisalign Can Help Your Smile With A Denton Dentist And Professional Advice

By Amie Murrieta

For patients who require orthodontic intervention to straighten their teeth, yet don't want to wear noticeable metal braces, there is now a better alternative. The Invisalign system offers the same results as traditional braces, yet is more comfortable to wear and it cannot be seen easily by others. A Denton dentist can explain how it works to those who are interested and will determine if they are a good candidate for it.

Invisalign is a system designed to provide the same results as metal braces yet without the high level of visibility; the patient is given a series of clear, plastic aligners which are to be worn in succession until the teeth reach their ideal state. The aligners are custom-made for each patient and progressively shift the teeth into the proper position.

The dentist will examine the patient's mouth to determine if he or she is a good candidate for Invisalign. X-rays will be taken, and an impression of the mouth will be cast from which a digital 3-D model will be designed to help plan the best strategy for correcting the bite and tooth positions. Aligners will be made based on these specifications.

The patient must commit to consistently wearing the aligner for at least 20 to 22 hours each day in order for it to have its desired effect. A new aligner will be worn approximately every two weeks. Patients will attend periodic check-ups to monitor their progress.

Another good quality of these appliances is that they do not place restrictions on one's diet, as they are simply removed before eating and drinking. Cleaning them is easy too, as they just need to be brushed regularly like teeth do. Since they are taken out for oral hygiene, one can also clean and floss teeth more easily than with braces.

The length of time the patient will need to wear the aligners for varies between 9 to 18 months, but for most it takes about one year. Some patients will not be eligible for this approach to orthodontic straightening and may be better off with metal braces. Consulting a Denton dentist is the best way to make sure this choice is appropriate.
